Are you going to Maldives and want to learn basic phrases in their language?


Maldives has incredibly rich history that has been influenced by many cultures over the years. Their language is very good example of this. Dhivehi (Maldivian language) is Indo-Aryan language derived from the Sinhalese language. It was influenced also by Tamil, Arabic, Hindustani, French, Persian, Portuguese and English.


Dhivehi is written in Thaana script. It is written from right to left.




Most of the Maldivians speak English as they second language but they are always happy if you at least greet in their language. Let's take a look at some of the basic phrases nad vocabulary.



  • Hello - Assalaamu alaikum

  • Thank you - Shukuriyaa

  • You're welcome - Maruhabaa

  • Please - Adhes kohfa

  • Yes - Aan

  • No - Noon

  • I am sorry - Ma-aafu kurey

  • How are you? - Haalu kihineh?

  • I am good, thank you - Ran'galhu, shukuriyaa

  • Goodbye - Dhanee

  • Good morning - Baajjaveri hendhuneh

  • Good night - Baajjaveri reygande
